Hailing from Providence, Rhode Island, Megasus brings forth crushing doom metal with a blatant retro tinge (as the name surely would suggest). Formed by members of Lightning Bolt, Amazing Royal Crowns, Laurels & Scared Stiff, their eponymous release brims with energy and enthusiasm from the offset with opening track ‘Ten Kingdoms’ a tune deliberately reminiscent of doom’s vivid beginnings.
The title track of the album follows swiftly after, combining thrash, doom and a little sprinkle of hardcore to produce a drum focused aggressive track well deserving of its title.
‘Hexes/ Szaadek’ opens with an onslaught of thrash guitar and drums that bridge the track throughout, leading us into the mightily named ‘Paladin Vs. Bezerker’ which, if you hadn’t guest already is as brutal and powerful as one would expect, avoiding the dangerous potholes of clichéd fantasy metal.
A cool, enjoyable and most importantly noisy release, Megasus ticks all the boxes for doom music that is engaging while not up its own arse and with the majority of the band being employees of Harmonix (creators of Rock Band & Guitar Hero) you can only hope that Megasus make a cameo appearance in an upcoming Guitar Hero.
